Nintendo provides a free parental controls system for the Switch that can be managed entirely from your smartphone. No third-party apps or subscriptions required. You can set play time limits, restrict games by age rating, disable online communication, and receive daily play time reports.
Option 1: Use the Smartphone App (Recommended)
The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app is available free on iOS and Android. This is the easiest way to manage settings and monitor usage.
- Download "Nintendo Switch Parental Controls" from the App Store or Google Play
- Open the app and sign in with your Nintendo Account (or create one)
- On the Switch, go to System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings
- Select Use Your Smart Device
- Enter the registration code shown on the Switch into the app
Option 2: Configure Directly on the Console
If you don't want to use the app, you can set controls directly on the Switch:
- Go to System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings
- Select Use This Console
- Create a 4-8 digit PIN
- Configure your restriction level
Set Play Time Limits
In the app or on the console, you can set a daily play time limit. When the limit is reached:
- Alarm Only: An alarm sounds but play can continue
- Suspend Software: The game is suspended and cannot continue until the next day
You can also set a "Bedtime Alarm" that notifies your child when it's time to stop playing, regardless of how much time they've used.
Restrict Games by Age Rating
Nintendo offers preset restriction levels based on age:
- Child: Only games rated for young children
- Pre-Teen: Games rated E10+ and below
- Teen: Games rated T and below
- Custom: Choose specific restrictions
If your child tries to launch a restricted game, they'll need your PIN to continue.
Disable Online Communication
Under Restriction Level > Custom Settings, you can disable:
- Communicating with Others: Blocks voice chat and messaging
- Posting to Social Media: Blocks sharing screenshots and videos
- VR Mode: Blocks VR content (Nintendo Labo VR)
Restrict eShop Purchases
The parental controls PIN is required for any Nintendo eShop purchases when restrictions are enabled. You can also:
- Remove saved payment methods from the console
- Disable "Remember Password" for the eShop
- Use Nintendo eShop cards instead of credit cards
Monitor Play Time
The smartphone app provides daily and monthly reports showing:
- Total play time per day
- Which games were played and for how long
- Monthly trends
You'll also receive push notifications when your child reaches their play time limit.
Bottom Line
Nintendo's built-in parental controls are comprehensive and free. Use the smartphone app for easy management and monitoring. Set appropriate age restrictions, disable online communication if needed, and enforce play time limits with the "Suspend Software" option. No additional monitoring software needed.
